The present Parish Church of St Mary was erected during the first half of the thirteenth century (1200-1250), probably on the site of an earlier Minster Church.
Various additions were built over the following years. In the mid 1800s the Church was restored and made structurally sound by George Gilbert Scott.
In the mid 1970s the building became structurally unsound at the West end and following a major appeal was reordered to its present arrangement in order to serve the local community seven days a week.
Further major refurbishment at the West End is planned for the future.
The Font pre-dates the building, it was inspired by the workshops of St. Alban's Abbey c. 1190, and the design is known as the Aylesbury Font.
