Becoming a member of St Mary's Choir

Juniors (Ages 8 - 16)

A musical education is one of the most useful things that a child can be given. Research studies have repeatedly found that children who learn singing or an instrument have a higher IQ, better memory, better grasp of science, mathematics and language, and better reasoning faculties: this is known by educationalists as the "Mozart Effect".

Children who sing in St Mary's choir receive a valuable musical training - learning good vocal production and musicianship skills (including music-reading), and getting to know a fine repertoire of music in several languages. They also learn to work as part of a team, to respond quickly and professionally to directions and to organise themselves efficiently.

Children join the choir as probationers after an initial meeting with the Music Co-Directors. Previous musical experience is an advantage but not a requirement since children will be taught musical skills as members of the choir. The probationary period is an opportunity for children to see what being a member of the choir is like, and whether they feel that they will enjoy it. If they decide that they wish to make the commitment, they can then be admitted as full members of the choir.

Adults (Ages 17 upwards)

The commitment for adults is the same as for children, and the benefits equally good. Adults who wish to join the choir are invited to join us for Friday rehearsals for several weeks, and to sit in the congregation on Sunday mornings during this period. They can then make the decision to join if they wish.

The scope and challenge of the music is such that some prior experience of singing and reading music is undoubtedly a help. However we do not make this a requirement, and adults may also pursue the RSCM Voice for Life scheme to improve their musicianship and music reading ability. The main prerequisite for joining is the ability to sing in tune!

Please contact the Music Director if you think you might be interested in joining the choir, or would like simply to know more.
